I was very lucky to be able to spend the last three days of September in Amsterdam at the Design & Emotion 2016 conference. If you haven’t heard about this event before, D&E is a biannual conference organised by the Design and Emotion Society in cooperation with other partners – predominantly educational institutions. Every edition takes place in a different city around the globe. It has travelled to four continents so far but this year the organisers decided to come back home – to the Netherlands (which was handy for me as Amsterdam is only one hour flight away, and I also found out about the conference a week before).
Design & Emotion functions as a forum for design practitioners, academics and researchers to present their insights and exchange knowledge with others within the industry. However, it wasn’t just designers that gathered during the event, but also psychologists, anthropologists, architects and many other. This emphasised the cross-disciplinary character of the field of design and emotion.
This year, D&E celebrated its 10th edition. This is a great achievement for the Design and Emotion Society mainly because this field of research is still in its infancy and despite significant interest, little research was done on involving users’ emotions in the process of design.
The programme of the conference was packed full of interesting sessions and it would be difficult to summarise them all in a single post. Instead I decided to write four separate posts delving deeper into an idea that inspired me the most from each day, plus one post summing up the whole conference.
